NBA talk after seven games
By Ryan Day
SYRACUSE - The only question is, when do the “one more year” chants start?
At this rate, probably soon.
Wesley Johnson has played just seven games at Syracuse, and he's already got Orange fans thinking about him leaving for the NBA.
It's nothing new. In 2003, Carmelo Anthony was virtually NBA-bound the second he stepped foot on campus. Donte Greene was the same way.
And last season, Jonny Flynn's gutsy play in the Big East Tournament certainly signaled his imminent departure to the pros.
So here we go again. Johnson's early-season play has garnered not only local attention, but national praise from all corners of the college basketball universe.
He was the MVP of the 2K Sports Classic, dazzling the crowds at the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden. He's also turned heads at the Carrier Dome, averaging 18.3 points per game and shooting 52 percent from the 3-point line.
And again Monday, the Iowa State transfer had everyone in attendance thinking, “this guy is too good for college ball.”
Johnson had 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists in just 23 minutes against Colgate, helping the Orange completely dominate Colgate in a 92-58 laugher. Johnson even had the highlight of the game, soaring on the fast break to catch an Andy Rautins' lob with one hand and flush it through the rim.
“I was surprised Wes went up and got that - I threw that pretty high,” Rautins said. “He caught it with one hand too. That was pretty impressive.”
But that's what happens when you're the best athlete on the floor. No matter who Syracuse plays this season, Johnson will be just that.
He can out-jump, out-hustle and out-think almost any defender. He's also shown off a nice little mid-range game, and a silky touch from the 3-point line.
Everything about his game says “NBA.”
And he makes it look so easy. I'm not even sure he broke a sweat while single-handedly outscoring Colgate for most of the first half before having to settle for a 16-16 tie at halftime.
“I didn't even know that until Kris (Joseph) told me at the half,” Johnson said with his trademark smile.
